Abstract:

A study of job satisfaction among employees of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC)-Vellore Division, Tamil Nadu, India Was undertaken by taking a sample of 200 comprising 22 Branch managers, 40 Officers and 138 Clerks. The study has found out that while there is high level of satisfaction in majority of job satisfaction factors in the case of branch managers and officers, there is a growing dissatisfaction in most of the issues except job security and post retirement among the clerical cadres. The organisation policies of LIC are skewed in favour of top echelons of the management. Even among the officers category, the level of satisfaction is moderate in the case of recognition for work, interpersonal relationship, supervision etc. and there is a total dissatisfaction in the matter of pay, grievance handling procedure and other financial facilities. In short it can be said that it is only branch managers who experience a higher level of satisfaction in almost all the factors. The LIC should realize that job satisfaction plays a vital role in having a peaceful employee- management relation. If it takes adequate steps for removing the identified unfavourable aspects, the level of job satisfaction is sure to move upward.
